Pilot Hunter Challenge Section added to the Outreach Competition Program

March 29, 2011

The USHJA Outreach Hunter Challenge is new to the USHJA Affiliate Outreach program and will be held in addition to the USHJA Outreach Medal Classes as a pilot program this year. USHJA Outreach Hunter Challenge is open to all riders at the Junior or Adult Amateur levels and is comprised of two phases.

Phase I - Consists of 8 hunter style obstacles with height to be in accordance with the specified level (ie Bronze 2’ -2’3”, Silver 2’6”, Gold 3’ and Platinum 3’3”). The top 6 competitors from phase I will be called back to participate in Phase II.

Phase II – Will test the rider’s ability to best display their horses talents and style over a minimum of 6 obstacles. Riders may be asked to perform a test selected by competition officials or to create their own test to best display the talents of their mount.

As an added benefit to Junior Riders the USHJA Outreach Hunter Challenge has partnered with the World Champion Hunter Rider.

Junior riders competing in the Outreach Hunter Challenge Classes will also accumulate individual points. The junior rider accumulating the most points in their top three shows will be selected as the Junior Hunter Challenge Regional Champion. The champion and reserve champion from each region will be invited as guests of the USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Program and will receive a $500 travel grant to attend the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlborough, MD. Champions and Reserve Champions will get the opportunity to meet top professionals, tour the show grounds, and sit with a judge to present awards to the WCHR top riders.

USHJA does not restrict entry into USHJA Outreach Hunter Challenge Classes however only participants who are USHJA members at the Outreach level or higher and whose horses are registered with the USHJA will be eligible to earn points. Please visit the USHJA Website to learn more about our membership options or horse registration.

We encourage all Outreach Managers to add this new program to their competition. For more information about adding these classes to your competition, contact Kim Knotek, kknotek@ushja.org, 859-225-6709.
