February 16, 2010

Lexington, Ky.— John French ridden horses finished one-two Feb. 13 in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, CA.

Forty-one pairs challenged for the top prize, but in the end it was Crown Affair, earning $3,000 for owner Yellow Dog Farm LLC, who came out the winner. Jessica Singer’s Cruise took the reserve spot and earned $2,000.

French, who is regarded as one of the top hunter riders in the world, took the inaugural $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby aboard Rumba in 2009. He also has a Derby win this year at the Desert Circuit 1 $10,000 The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby, presented by Devoucoux aboard Over the Moon.

The course was designed by John Manning. The top 12 pairs in the competition came back for Manning’s Handy Course, which featured a bounce, rollbacks, and a hand gallop to test the horses and riders from an entirely different perspective.

Also excelling in the event, was Jessie Lang, who grabbed the yellow ribbon in the irons of Margrot Snowdon's C. Quito. Taking fourth place was Jenny Karazissis, who rode Holly Scapa's Bingo Bongo, while Melissa Doddridge piloted Pamela Doddridge's Bentley to a fifth-place finish to round out the top five in the class. Play Through, ridden by Hope Glynn and owned by Richard Mazess, was sixth, while the Glynn-ridden Weatherly took seventh. Grandada, with Callie Selchau aboard for Nick Haness, completed the top eight finishers.
