Dinan Bests Competitive Field Derby Win

August 3, 2009

August 3, 2009 – Lexington, KY – Katie Dinan and Angelo put in a daring performance in the handy round of the $10,000 The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby to claim victory at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, New York. The Thursday afternoon class marked the third derby start for Angelo, an 11-year-old Westphalian gelding.

Course designer, Rian Beals of Saugerties, New York, built two courses that challenged horses and riders, and allowed the best to prove their brilliance and daring. The handy course included a trot fence and five option jumps that tested the 46 horse and rider combinations entered in the prestigious class.

Dinan of New York, New York made the top 12 cut after the classic hunter round to return for the second course handy round on both Angelo and Borealus. She posted a first round score of 174 on Angelo and a 163 on Borealus. Trained by Steve Weiss, Dinan entered the handy round portion of the class trailing Patricia Griffith and Cool Boy. By choosing some of the more difficult tracks and options, the 15-year-old junior rider was able to come from behind for the win.

Matthew Metwell piloted Zeidler Farm Canada’s Pioneer to a second place finish and Kirsten Coe took third and fourth place honors aboard Radscha a.w. and Double Diamond.

The Saugerties derby is the first class of the 2009-2010 series that HITS has hosted. On Wednesday before the derby, HITS president, Tom Struzzieri, hosted a reception in the VIP tent to raise awareness and interest in the USHJA’s “Building for Growth” Capital Campaign. Organized by HITS’s Lisa Engel, the event included information on the campaign’s goal to raise $6.5 million to fund and maintain a nationally recognized headquarters for the rapidly growing USHJA at the Kentucky Horse Park. The building is to be completed in the fall of 2009. “We were very excited to be able to participate in such a worthy cause and look forward to working with the USHJA in the future,” Engel said after the event.
