Castello Posts Another Derby Win

August 3, 2009

Lexington, KY – August 3, 2009 – Castello proved why he is one of the top ranked derby horses in the nation when Jack Hardin Towell rode him to victory in the $10,000 The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show.

Owned by Roger Smith of Wellington, Florida, Castello finished the first round classic course in sixth place. But in the second round handy course, the 12-year-old gelding bested 11 other horses with his brilliance and athletic ability. Course designer, Blake Alder, set a challenging track for the field that included fence height and track options.

The gelding who was originally imported from Europe as Smith’s jumper has proven himself quite adept in the hunter ring. “We started showing him in the derby because he’s very scopey and never stops at a jump,” Smith’s wife, Jennifer, says.

Hunt Tosh and Rosalynn took reserve champion honors followed by Val D’Isere also ridden by Hardin Towell.

Castello was the winner of three derbies last year and will be competing in the inaugural 2009 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals on August 21 and 22 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Castello will enter the finals as the number two ranked horse in the nation behind SBS Farm’s Jersey Boy.
