Waxman & Falcon Capture First Place Honors in the $15,000 Country Heir Derby

June 13, 2009

Lexington, KY – Jennifer Waxman rode Falcon to a first place finish in the Country Heir II The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby on June 13. The $15,000 class was held in the new outdoor stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park, which will be the location of the 2009 ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals in August.

Waxman and her 15-year-old gelding lead the class after the first round’s classic course. The course featured natural obstacles and long distances with fence height options. Kaitlin Campbell on Douglas Wheeler’s Vulita H and Hunt Tosh on Wheeler’s Lone Star followed closely behind Waxman heading into the handy round.

A veteran of the class, Waxman knew she had to put in a strong handy round performance to remain in the lead and win the class championship. The Country Heir II derby marked her and Falcon’s sixth derby start. Last year in the Kentucky Summer derby, they finished a close second to Aaron Vale and Second City.

Saturday evening’s course included a challenging inside turn to a trot jump then a long 10 strides to an oxer, but the obstacles on course gave Waxman and Falcon little trouble as they earned 10 bonus points from both sets of judges for their brilliance. Coupled with their classic round score, their handy round performance was enough to keep them in the lead and earn first place honors.

Waxman points to her horse’s bravery and competitiveness for their success in the derby ring. Her trainers, Ken and Emily Smith found the Holsteiner gelding for her four years ago at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Palm Beach. The pair will return to the Kentucky Horse Park at the end of August to compete against the top-ranked horses in the nation for the derby finals championship. Falcon finished the 2008/2009 derby series as the number 14 ranked horse.
