Application for Category I of the USHJA Trainer Certification Program Now Available

June 23, 2009

After three years of hard work and research from the dedicated USHJA Trainer Certification Committee, the USHJA is proud to announce the USHJA Trainer Certification Program (TCP) Category I application is now available. This program was designed to preserve the American Hunter/Jumper Forward Riding System of riding and jumping through the development of a comprehensive education and certification program for all levels of professional trainers.

The creation of this program has been supported by top professionals in our sport, including George H. Morris who encouraged USHJA to develop the program as he recognized a need for certification in this country among hunter and jumper trainers. "I am a great believer in trainer certification and it is something we should have started 30-40 years ago. I am proud to be a member of the USHJA Trainer Certification Committee and everyone must be supportive of the efforts of the USHJA to develop this program. It is exciting to see that we (USA) are finally catching up to what other countries have been requiring for years. Just as in most other legitimate sports in our country, in equestrian sports, our instructors need to be certified too."

This is a voluntary program, intended to help promote trainer credibility and offer ongoing professional support through continuing education, recognition of merit, and a forum for long-term professional development. The Trainer Certification Program aims to promote the highest standards and professional continuity while still allowing for individualism.
In order to receive and maintain certification, trainers will have a proven bank of knowledge on a broad spectrum of relevant professional information including (but not limited to): horsemanship basics, safety of horses and riders, training techniques, and business ethics.

The benefits of the USHJA Trainer Certification Program provide the hunter/jumper industry with a unified education program based upon the American Hunter/Jumper Forward Riding System which provides recommended training methods and goals. This program also provides education in other areas of the sport including stable management, horsemanship practices, safety, and professional conduct. Certification through this program will allow trainers to promote a reputable and reliable resource base for current and potential riding students.

Among other benefits, certified trainers will be offered discounts for insurance with participating firms including: Dietrich Insurance, the EMO Agency, Hallmark Insurance, Markel Insurance and the Equisport Agency. Certified trainers will also be provided with a certified trainer logo to use for promotion and marketing.

The TCP will offer three levels of certification. All trainers interested in certification will be required to complete and be certified at Category I. Application information, requirements, including the SmartPak/USHJA Trainer Symposium, and an FAQ are located on the USHJA website.
