Maggie Jayne Wins First Derby of the 2009/2010 USHJA International Hunter Derby Series

June 10, 2009

Lexington, KY – June 10, 2009 – Maggie Jayne and Early Applause jumped into the 2009/2010 USHJA International Hunter Derby Series with a decisive win at the $15,000 Showplace Spring Spectacular Derby on June 9. Held in the Grand Prix Ring at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois, the pair bested 36 other entries to win the class.

Course designers, Pat Boyle and Skip Bailey, set two challenging courses that tested the athleticism and bravery of horse and rider. “It was a very fair and beautiful course,” Bailey says. “There were a lot of creative jumps that gave riders the opportunity to really show what their horses could do and allowed them to take advantage of the different options available.”

Jayne and Early Applause, a 7-year-old Warmblood gelding, finished the first round of the class in second place behind Jane Gatson’s Upshot ridden by Kelley Farmer. “The first round was straight forward. There were natural obstacles – brush jumps and a coup, and my goal was to get a smooth ride. He’s got a great stride and he’s a big jumper, so it wasn’t hard getting the ride out of him,” Jayne says of her trip on Early Applause in the classic round.

The top 12 horses and riders from the first round were invited to test their skills over a handy course that included fence height and track options, and proved more challenging than the first course. “There were a lot of inside turns, which was a challenge because I haven’t ridden a lot of them,” Jayne says. “But it was a lot of fun and he’s a great horse to ride.” The pair’s effort was enough to secure the class championship while Upshot and Farmer earned reserve champion honors and Missy Clark’s Raven ridden by Kelsey Thatcher took third place.

A relatively new team, the Showplace Spring Spectacular marked Jayne and Early Applause’s fourth show together and second derby attempt. They entered the class off a third place finish at the Devon Horse Show Derby held at the end of May in Pennsylvania. The gelding owned by Maura Thatcher’s Pony Lane Farm located in South Jordan, Utah was purchased in April from Larry Glefke. With Glefke, he had a second place finish at the WEF II Derby in March, and finished the 2008/2009 USHJA International Hunter Derby Series in eighth place. Along with the other 75 top qualifiers, Early Applause and Jayne are invited to compete at the International Hunter Derby Finals at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky August 21-22.

“We’ll definitely be at the finals in August,” Jayne says of her future plans with the bay gelding. “We think the derbies are great and love competing in them.”
